ATP Swabs for Surface Hygiene Testing is the consumable that can be used with the ATP luminometer or ATP detector for surface hygiene testing.
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a molecule that carries energy within cells. It is the main energy currency of the cell, and it is an end product of the processes of photophosphorylation (adding a phosphate group to a molecule using energy from light), cellular respiration, and fermentation. ATP captures chemical energy obtained from the breakdown of food molecules and releases it to fuel other cellular processes. It consists of three main structures: the nitrogenous base, adenine; the sugar, ribose; and a chain of three phosphate groups bound to ribose.
ATP is the energy source of all living cells, including microbes such as bacteria. When the cell dies, ATP degrades rapidly. High ATP concentrations indicate a high number of live microbes in water. ATP assays can be used as a trending tool to monitor microbial contamination.
