Are the kits MRL-compliant for South African regulation?
Yes. LODs are set to detect below applicable South African feed and food MRLs for each toxin. Full compliance evidence is available on request from the technical team.
Do I need a reader for quantitative results?
iQuanti kits use a compact NB Reader (RBM1001 or RBM1003) to convert strip colour into numeric ppb. The reader is a once-off capex; strips are consumable per test.
How should the kits be stored?
Kits ship cold-chain and require refrigeration at 2-8°C. Shelf life is 12-18 months depending on kit. Cold-chain is maintained from manufacturer through to your lab.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by moulds on grain during growth, harvest and storage. In South African feed production the most economically significant are aflatoxin B1, zearalenone (ZON), deoxynivalenol (DON, also called vomitoxin), fumonisin, ochratoxin A and T-2 toxin. Which format for which use case
Lateral flow rapid tests give a visual pass/fail read against a cut-off. Best for goods-in screening at grain silos, feed mills and pet food plants where you need a same-hour go/no-go decision on each intake load.
iQuanti quantitative rapid tests use the same rapid strip format plus a portable reader that returns a numeric ppb value. Best for compliance reporting where you need to document an actual level, not just a pass/fail.
ELISA plate kits provide batch quantification for QC laboratories. 96-well format for 40+ samples per run. Best when you have a lab and need lower detection limits than lateral flow can provide.
South African regulatory context
The South African Department of Agriculture regulates aflatoxin B1 in animal feed with lower limits for lactating dairy cattle than for other livestock. RingbioSA rapid strips are supplied with cut-offs positioned to reliably flag samples above the applicable regulatory limit. For maize, wheat and mixed feed intended for lactating cows, use a low cut-off strip or iQuanti for numeric confirmation.
Sample preparation
Rapid mycotoxin tests require a simple methanol-water extraction of a ground grain or feed sample. RingbioSA supplies the extraction buffers as part of the kit. Extraction is a few minutes, the rapid strip runs in a further 5-10 minutes. Total time from sample to result is under 20 minutes per single mycotoxin.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run multiple mycotoxins on the same sample? Yes. One extraction can feed multiple single-analyte strips (aflatoxin, DON, zearalenone) in parallel. Multiplex strips are also available for combinations.
What is the shelf life? Typically 12-18 months at 2-8°C. Stock dispatched from SA is always well inside remaining shelf life.
Do I need a lab? No, for lateral flow. The strips work with a hand-held cut-off card at the receiving bay. For iQuanti numeric results you need the portable reader.
What sample size do I need? A small ground grain sample per test (grams, not kilograms).
Do you offer training? Yes. Method training on first order is included, either at your site (SA regions on request) or via video call.
Do you supply the reader on a rental basis? The iQuanti reader is available for purchase; contact us for options if outright purchase is not practical for your volume.
